About Acorn, Iowa

Madison Wolfe, director of Acorn, Iowa

Chosen by the Independent Shorts Awards Annual Committee for its “compelling and provocative exploration of friendship, loyalty, and the chaos of adolescence within a fictional confined summer-camp world,” Acorn, Iowa centers on Olivia, whose summer routine is upended by the return of her deranged partner-in-mischief, Maria—forcing her to choose between relapsing into old schemes or confronting Maria and facing the consequences head-on.

Madison Wolfe has described Acorn, Iowa as a deeper exploration of her long-held interest in complex young female friendships. Drawing inspiration from films such as Virgin Suicides and Girl, Interrupted, the film blends biting wit with nostalgic summer-camp visuals and offers “a darkly comedic yet emotionally raw look at moral decisions, identity, and the ambiguous bonds of troubled adolescence.”
