On Snip — A Small Story with Big Feelings

Snip is a coming-of-age microfilm about a young girl determined to finally get the haircut she’s always wanted — and the unexpected feelings she experiences afterward.

Faris shared that the story was inspired by a friend’s real experience, making the film both personal and universal: “It’s also a bit of a queer coming-out story. A writer I worked with had someone in their life who got a big haircut, and people started whispering and bullying her. That feeling of being exposed and judged became the heart of the film.”

The director added: “As women, most of us have a moment like that, even if we’re not queer — trying on a new look or a new style and being terrified of how people will react.”

Universality in a Microfilm

Despite its brief runtime, Snip resonates widely. It captures the fear and exhilaration of change, whether it’s about identity, style, or self-discovery. “This girl is so excited, trying to take a stance, and then she’s met with reactions that don’t match her expectations. That clash is her worst nightmare,” Faris explained.

By distilling the story to a single, relatable moment, Snip demonstrates the storytelling power of the microfilm format.

Los Angeles Premiere & Festival Circuit

Independent Shorts Awards marked the Los Angeles Premiere of Snip — and the largest screen it had ever been shown on. “We’ve been in three other festivals, but this was the first time seeing it in a big theater, with reclining chairs and everything. It was awesome,” Faris said.

She also noted the importance of the festival community: “Every time I’m at a festival, I meet new people. Even just standing in line for this interview, I was chatting with other filmmakers. It’s such a fun, supportive space.”

Recognition at Independent Shorts Awards

Winning Best Microfilm at the 7th Annual Independent Shorts Awards was both affirming and inspiring for Faris. “I’m so grateful that such a small story was recognized in such a big way. It shows that even the tiniest moments can make a lasting impact.”
