Join host Olivia Lyle (@olivialyle1) for an exclusive conversation with lead actresses Julie Theis and Sydney Cope, whose film Dilemma (USA), directed by Trevan Jay Hiatt, had its California Premiere at the 7th Annual Independent Shorts Awards at Regal LA Live, Los Angeles. The film was nominated for Best Thriller Short. Interview recorded by Kyle Reed (@thekylereed).

Dilemma — Twists, Turns, and Tension
Dilemma plunges viewers into the harrowing aftermath of a single reckless decision. When a group of high school friends becomes ensnared in a situation they cannot escape, fear and guilt drive them to the edge. As their friendship unravels, every choice tightens the noose around them, raising questions of morality, trust, and survival. With its gripping suspense, the film keeps audiences questioning how far one can go when faced with impossible circumstances.
Portraying Psychological Complexity
For Julie Theis, Dilemma marked her first experience acting in a thriller, while Sydney Cope brought her own background in the genre to the project. “It was my first time,” Theis shared, before adding with a smile that “Sydney has a ton of experience.” Both actresses agreed that it took the vision of the entire creative team to bring the psychological intensity of the film to life, crediting Matthew Samuels and Matthew Flug, the New York–based writers and creators, for shaping the story.
Reflecting on the challenge of stepping into such a dark and twisted space, Cope admitted she relished it: “It’s very easy for me to get into it… we all have that dark side to us. So, I think tapping into that is so fun.”

Having sat through multiple screening blocks, they were struck by the diversity of stories and voices represented. “It’s massive. People fly in from everywhere to be here,” they observed, noting how honored they felt to be among the nominees for Best Thriller Short in such an accomplished lineup.
