Join host Olivia Lyle (@olivialyle1) for an exclusive conversation with Naosheen Ahmed, writer, producer, and lead actress of Pandaal (USA). Directed by Shaily Sanghvi, the film was nominated for Best Women Short at the 7th Annual Independent Shorts Awards at Regal LA Live, Los Angeles. Interview recorded by Kyle Reed (@thekylereed).
Pandaal — A Story of Pain, Resilience, and Justice

The film follows Durga, a female pimp who dispenses her own brand of justice by pimping out abusive men. When a new case brings her haunting past to light, she must confront her deepest wounds and darkest secrets. Pandaal is both unsettling and empowering, shining a light on abuse and survival through a layered protagonist who embodies fear, vulnerability, and strength.
For Ahmed, the writing process was a profoundly personal journey. “Pandaal is a story that is incredibly close to my heart, as it draws inspiration from true events… This is a story that needs to be told—not just because abuse is an important topic to address but because it’s time we stop waiting for someone else to save us. Like Durga, the protagonist, we must take matters into our own hands.”
Bringing the Vision to Life
As both writer and actress, Ahmed described the experience of seeing the project finally materialize after years of development. “This idea was in my mind for like three or four years and finally seeing it on the big screen was a very surreal moment.” To embody her character, she drew on personal experiences, extensive reading, and close observation of people around her, blending those elements into a performance that aimed for authenticity.

Creating Pandaal also required ambitious production choices, including transforming Los Angeles into the setting of an Indian brothel. From set design to casting, every department worked to immerse the audience in the story. The team even conducted extensive dialect training with the actors to ensure authentic performances.
A Calling Toward Acting
Reflecting on her path to cinema, Ahmed noted that while she once considered becoming a vascular surgeon, she ultimately followed her childhood love of theater. “The calling got really strong. So, I thought I should just listen to this and go for it. I love playing different characters besides just being me.”

Message to the Audience
When asked what she hopes audiences take away from Pandaal, Ahmed was clear: “Violence of any kind towards anyone or any gender is just wrong.” Through its bold narrative and complex central character, Pandaal challenges viewers to confront cycles of abuse and recognize resilience in the face of trauma.
