Ways of Talking — Mystery and Memory

The film follows a girl whose brother died under mysterious circumstances. Refusing to accept simple explanations, she confronts the eerie buzzing that haunts her home. Blending supernatural and psychological elements, the short explores how grief reshapes memory and perception.

Seeing the Story on the Big Screen

Reflecting on her experience of watching her film projected for the first time, Gao noted how different it felt compared to the editing room. “When I made it, it looked different, and then on the big screen it looks like a completely different film,” she said. Sharing that moment with friends and family added to the significance, and she credited her cast—especially lead actress Skyler Shen—for bringing the story to life.

Writing Through Collaboration

Although she describes writing as her most challenging task, Gao embraces a collaborative process. “Directing and producing is where I’m the best because I’m good at collaborating and talking to other people,” she explained. Brainstorming with peers and exchanging dialogue helps her shape ideas before committing them to the page, a process she finds both creative and rewarding.

A Young Filmmaker’s Path

At 19, Gao is a freshman at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she studies film and television production. Originally from Singapore and now based in New York, she began her artistic career as an actor before discovering her passion behind the camera. She has directed six short films to date and continues to pursue experimental projects that reflect her own experiences and vision.

Building Community

For Gao, filmmaking is as much about people as it is about stories. “I’m just happy to be here with everyone… it’s a great community,” she said, underlining how important collaboration and connection are in her creative journey.
